Easter without a party or two. Obviously our fantastic soft plays

Free swimming for Primary School children this Easter break
Edinburgh Leisure announces that thanks to funding from the City of Edinburgh
Council, the free swimming initiative will be on offer again at all
Edinburgh Leisure pools from 3rd - 20th April (inclusive).
Primary School children can swim for free during Public Swim sessions.
Remember that children under 5 swim for free all year round at every
Edinburgh Leisure pool. The free swimming is part of a wide choice of Easter holiday activities for children of all ages.
When is the free swimming available? Have a look at our handy at a glance guide so you can see when our public swim sessions are for children and families. Plan ahead The
earlier you get there the more fun you can have; we recommend arriving
no later than half an hour before the Public Swim session's finish time.
It's important that children are safe whilst in the swimming pools. To
make sure they enjoy their swim time and stay safe, our normal
adult/child ratios will be observed. These are: • Under 5 years old: one adult to one child (with or without armbands), or one adult to two children with armbands • 5 to 8 years old: one adult to two children (with or without armbands) • Mixed ages: one adult to one child under five with armbands, and one 5 - 8 years old (with or without armbands) • Over 9 years old: children can use the swimming pool on their own As
always, if you have any queries contact the centre on the number
listed. We hope you stay active over the holidays and enjoy your swim!

Thank you so much to Audrey Blake (Scottish Opera), JudithMcKerrecher (SCILT Professional Development Officer) and to her colleagues from the Confucius
Institute for Scotland’s Schools (CISS) for providing such high quality
language learning workshops for our P5 pupils on Monday 30th March.
Judith began by sharing Scottish Opera's Warriors! ebook and it was wonderful to see how many lyrics and how much Mandarin pupils have already picked up.
We were then treated to three fantastic language workshops:
Numbers
Colours - Beijing opera masks
Calligraphy
Families are in for a real treat on Wednesday 6th May when our P5s team up with our friends from Scottish Opera for 'Warriors!'
A wonderful opportunity for our children to participate in this showcase event, in a prestigious venue, celebrating young people's talents in music, drama and dance with schools from across the city. Our pupils were expertly prepared for the Resonate: Studio to Stage concert at the Queen's Hall on Monday 30th March by Mrs Campbell and they all made us truly proud, rising admirably to the occasion by performing one of the BBC Ten Pieces: Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Pupils also performed "Greensleeves" and thoroughly deserved their rousing applause.
Many thanks to Lucy Vaughan (Principal Officer Creative Learning) and Carla Hay (Youth Music Initiative Projects Assistant) for inviting us to take part and to the huge behind-the-scenes team who provided such high quality sound and lighting, making everything run so smoothly. Thank you to Mrs Samanda Campbell who led and conducted the orchestra superbly, accompanied by Mrs Ruth McVicker on piano. Thanks also to Mrs Katherine Peace for escorting and playing alongside the pupils and to all the families who came along to support and celebrate the children's hard work and achievement. A lovely way to end the term and we look forward to hearing the Orchestra and other musical ensembles perform on May 13th at a showcase organised by the Parent Council.

Good luck to our P7 Swimmers and to our P6 and P7 Divers competing at the annual Edinburgh Primary Schools Sports Association (EPSSA) Swim and Dive Gala on Wednesday 1st April. Thank you to Mrs Beth Walker (Sciennes P.E. and Swimming Specialist) who co-ordinates and comperes the event for her support in trialling and preparing the pupils.
The event begins at the Royal Commonwealth Pool at 9.45am and Sciennes will be taking part sporting our '70' swimming caps, generously funded by the School Council last year. Race timetable is shown below. (Schools with more than 125 pupils are 'A' schools and 'B' schools have fewer than 125 pupils). Every primary school in Edinburgh has an EPSSA number for competitions and ours is 70. Pupils have been issued with a letter and are reminded to bring £1.00 for lockers. Parents wishing to spectate are welcome to accompany us to RCP and we will leave school shortly after morning registration. (Please note that, whatever our personal results, we always stay for the medal ceremony at the end and so may be late back for lunch.)

Have you checked out our Vimeo Videos? Our children have been engaging with the innovative BBC Ten Pieces classical music initiative in many ways throughout the year and here are a few video examples of some of their class work. (Alternatively, click on the VIDEOS button on our school website.)
Great initiative from P6 pupils Luke, Toby, Ewan, Archie M, Matthew R, Tom and Santosh organising a Bake Sale on the Meadows this morning as part of their 'Me and My World' JASS award in aid of Sciennes Playground Fundraising.
At the P4-7 Believe • Achieve Assembly on Friday 27th March we celebrated P6 pupil Milenka's fantastic achievement at a recent International Fencing competition in Poland where she came 26th out of 128 participants in her age group. She was the highest ranked girl from Scotland and the second highest ranking from Britain. Milenka gave a confident and engaging presentation and was roundly congratulated by all.
Milenka, far right
Pupils had an opportunity to share their learning and achievements at Parents' Consultations this week and it was wonderful to welcome families into school. We really value our ongoing partnership with families. Well done also to all the staff who have worked so hard to display their pupils' work to such great effect and we hoped you enjoyed visiting classrooms. A favourite haunt was the 'Evacuee's Waiting Room' on the top landing, complete with suitcases and gas mask boxes!
Each P6 class performed their fabulous BBC Ten Pieces dances at Assembly last week and this week they were able to see the video of their Year Group performance of Anna Meredith's 'Connect It' dance. We think Mr Howie's 'Sciennes' animated logo is super cool!
JASS AWARDS in P6 and P7
We aim to allocate about six months to the Junior Award Scheme Scotland (JASS) awards at Bronze (P6) and Silver (P7) Levels and we include as many holidays within that time as possible - from the beginning of the October holiday until the end of the Easter holiday - to help pupils achieve their goals. Next term, pupils have been asked to give a short talk explaining how they have achieved either 8 (Bronze) or 12 (Silver) hours in each of the four categories: Get Active, Stay Active; Adventure; My Interests; Me and My World. At Assembly we highlighted the numerous Easter holiday activities available to help any pupils make up additional hours still required to achieve the award (see slideshow and website or Sciennes Twitter feed and Facebook Page for details). Individual log in accounts have now been created so we hope to begin our pilot eJASS programme with some of our P7 pupils before the end of term.
ME AND MY WORLD JASS
Luke and Toby gave details of their innovating idea to achieve their 'Me and My World' certificate by running a Bake Sale in the Meadows during football practice tomorrow morning Saturday 28th March from 9.30am. All items £1.00 and all proceeds to the Playground Fund. It never ceases to amaze that a third of our school population - 215 pupils! - take part in the Sciennes Football Club. Testament indeed to the great enthusiasm and dedication of so many of our parents and supporters.
Me and My World Ideas:
This year, our pupils have generously supported local and national charity fundraisers: Food Bank, Children in Need, Comic Relief, as well as taking part in Playground Fundraising events at school including Camera Obscura Family evening, Christmas Fair and the forthcoming Swimathon. Participation in these events counts towards the 'Me and My World' JASS award, as does making a difference at home such as helping neighbours or gardening. Pupils have been asked to show support on Saturday 28th March for WWF's Earth Hour by switching off lights at 8.30pm - 9.30pm, which would count as an hour towards the award. Pupils might also consider preparing and delivering a Talk about a charitable organisation, or deciding to give their time in some way to help others.
The Science Festival is about to begin and to highlight the exciting opportunities on offer we showed the 'Scientific Method Rap.' Mr McKenna has posters and leaflets in his Science Lab and invited pupils to come and ask him about some of the activities on offer during the holiday. (See website and Sciennes Twitter feed or Facebook Page.)
We also practised "It's A Wonderful World", ready to sing it at our Easter Assemblies next week on Thursday morning, led by Mrs Noble.
Please note that term ends on THURSDAY 2nd APRIL at 3.20pm, normal time, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back to school on TUESDAY 21st APRIL.
Blaze Basketball has organised an U12 girls game against Edinburgh Lions Basketball
Club from 3-4pm at the Crags on Friday 27th March, just before the primary school
cluster league. Sarah, Eoghann and Sheila have given a special invitation to the girls at
Sciennes who have been attending the lunchtime club. They will receive a free t-shirt if they can attend the event!
Judy
Murray’s Miss-Hits programme announced its new free mobile and tablet app has been shortlisted for the Sports Technology Awards, in
the ‘Best Technology to Promote Participation in Sport’ Category. The
app is now available for download on all Apple and Android devices.
Designed
by Judy Murray, Miss-Hits has been launched in partnership with the
Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). The programme is specifically targeted at
girls aged five to eight years old and aims to get more young girls
playing tennis. It focuses on fun, friendship and enjoyment, whilst
enabling girls to discover skills they never knew they had.
The
programme features six characters who take the girls through the basics
of tennis with a variety of active sessions. Each character has their
own signature tennis shot, trick, game and dance, to help the girls
learn more about each of the basic elements of tennis.
The Miss-Hits website launched on Monday 23rd March; you can visit the website atwww.miss-hits.com The
website has 3 sections- adults, children, and coaches, including a
feature to register interest in becoming a Miss-Hits coach.
The
Sports Technology Awards celebrate the increasingly important role that
technology plays in sports, with the Miss-Hits app being one of six to
be shortlisted in its category. The winner will be announced at the
awards ceremony on Friday 27th March 2015.
British
Fed Cup captain, Judy Murray designed the programme and has been
helping to roll it out over the past eight months. Judy said “we’re
delighted to see the Miss-Hits app shortlisted for these prestigious
awards. The programme has had overwhelming interest since last summer
and we can’t wait to train up more coaches and see more young girls get
excited about tennis. Miss-Hits is about having fun, and offering young
girls the chance to have really positive first experiences of the sport.
The app and the website look great and will hopefully really enhance
the programme and engage with both adults and children.”
To keep up with all the latest news from Miss-Hits, visit:

and adventurous activities taking place this Easter in the city. The
programme is open to pupils from P6 – S4 and most sessions run from 10am
– 4pm.
You can book individual days or a week-long progressive programme. You may also be able to work towards outdoor skills awards.
Come and join us for an Easter adventure! Full details of dates, pricing and how to book are available on www.joininedinburgh.org/Sports-Unit. If you need additional information please contact Lynne Crawford on Lynne.Crawford@edinburgh.gov.uk
It is just the most
amazing privilege to hear each day from children of their wider
achievements outwith school and we very much welcome children and
families informing us of success. The Senior Leadership Team endeavours to highlight accomplishments on our website and at
Assemblies. The ‘spotlight’ in the P1-3 Assembly and ‘What have you done
today to make yourself feel proud?’ at the P4-7 Assembly, are always
full and a great opportunity to recognise and encourage achievement. The
class teachers also post information of activities in school on the
Class Pages of our school website. We make every attempt to celebrate
our children’s efforts as: Successful Learners, Confident Individuals,
Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors.
We
hope you will
enjoy coming to Parent/Carer Consultations on Tuesday 24th March
(5pm-8pm) or Thursday 26th March (4pm-7pm) and that it will help
further the
partnership between home and school for your child’s learning.
You
will have received an appointment time and we suggest it
is worth trying to arrive about fifteen minutes early. This will allow
you to locate your child’s classroom and spend some time looking at
their work before meeting your child's teacher in the Hall. You can of
course visit the classroom after your
appointment. Primary Seven pupils meet their teachers on the top landing
and have been invited to join the meeting with you. Please wait outside
on the landing until called in.
Do
take time, if you can, to look at the displays around the school. The Parent Council will have refreshments for sale outside the Hall. There is a
Book Fair in the Library and we hope you will find time to look at our Playground display.

Primary Four are currently receiving cricket coaching arranged by Jonathan Wallace, our Active Schools Co-ordinator.
Boys and girls can join Carlton at age 7.
If your child of any age is interested in joining for the upcoming 2015 season, please get in touch by emailing juniormembers@carltoncc.co.uk.
Although the junior membership is full apart from the youngest group
(those who will be 7 before the start of the season), they are running a
waiting list. They will be reviewing the list before the start of the
season and will then offer places to as many children on the waiting
list as we can.
If you have any other questions about joining or Carlton Juniors in general, please email juniors@carltoncc.co.uk.
"Carlton is a community club in the city.
We take great pride in how our club has grown and
developed over recent years and, in particular, the close way that the
junior and senior sections of the club work together.
Our junior section is run by volunteer parents, supported by a small number of professional coaches.
We have four main aims for the junior section:
To help youngsters fall in love with cricket.
To help all keen young players improve their game.
To support talented young players to progress and play at as high a level as they want/can.
For parents and their children to feel welcome around Grange Loan and as part of the wider cricket club."
Outstanding, polished performances from our three excellent Primary Six classes at P4-7 Assembly on Friday 20th March to three of the ten BBC Ten Pieces of classical music:
P6A Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King"
P6B Mozart's "Horn Concerto"
P6C Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5"
Many thanks to Vanessa from Dance Division for developing the dances with the children this term, assisting with yesterday's filmed performance in the playground (including the P6 Year Group performance of Edinburgh composer Anna Meredith's "Connect It") then rehearsing and leading them through today's Assembly. Video footage to follow!
Well done also to Daniel and Christie from P5B on their Internet Safety
presentation, reminding us all to stay safe online. All pupils were also
reminded that they may only take photographs with their teacher's permission and that all mobile phones must be switched off before school until the end of the school day.
Our grand - quite exceptional - total raised for Comic Relief was announced at P4-7 Assembly on Friday 20th March. Once doubled by the UK Government, it amounts to an incredible £1913.22!
P5 pupil May read her touching 'Kindness' poem, assisted by Rose, and we all want to say thank you to our school community for their great kindness and generosity.
May's Kindness Acrostic Poem Kindness is within you, you can be kind in any way In your house make breakfast in bed just for mum and dad Never think it's just about you, it's about other people too Do a kind thing within your heart, maybe just one or two Notice all around you everywhere around, help an elderly person so he does not fall to the ground Even if you're in a rush you stop and look around. Help them or say hello. Anyway it's kindness as you go So you see it's not a joke, be kind to anyone and you will see there's no reward it's just a little fun So now you see how kindness grows now you can be kind, on you go!
