Sciennes Parents’ Night? …..Some Advice from Fellow Parents

We hope you will enjoy coming to Parent Consultations and that it will help further the partnership between home and school for your child’s learning.

You will have received an appointment time from the school. We suggest it is worth trying to arrive about fifteen minutes early. This will allow you to locate your child’s classroom and spend some time looking at their work. You can of course visit the classroom after your appointment.

Do take time, if you can, to look at the displays around the school. Also the PTA will have refreshments for sale outside the Hall. There is a Book Fair in the Library.

Do you have ideas/comments/suggestions about Sciennes? There will be comments slips available on both evenings, and a box to post them in. Please see the Pages section on the right hand side for feedback and questions from the last Parent Consultation Evenings in October 2011.

We are also looking to recruit parents to the School Council and its subgroups. Please look out for the 'adverts' outside the Hall.

A Curriculum For Excellence – Celebrating Wider Achievement

Congratulations to Jemima Harrison, P5a, on her winning entry in Edinburgh Leisure’s writing competition. Jemima will attend the Royal Commonwealth Pool opening ceremony and enjoy a swim in the wonderful new pool.
Donald McDonald, Headteacher at James Gillespie’s High School, contacted Sciennes to share the good news that the chess team had reached the last 16 of a UK tournament and former Sciennes pupils – Sam Gregory, Captiva Mills, Rishi Pandya and Jamie Underwood were very ably representing the high school. He recognised the superb support and encouragement of the Sciennes Chess Club.
Holly McCluskey P3b, James Beeston P5a and Anna Wilson P6c represented the Pupil Council and contributed to the DHT recruitment and selection procedure. They met candidates and provided an interesting tour of school. On the interview day, all involved commented on their confidence and good manners, answering questions and presenting such a positive view of Sciennes. Prior to the process, Ms. McGhee helped them develop a very good understanding of procedures and this certainly contributed to Holly, James and Anna’s excellent involvement.

Fundraiser

As some of you may know I am a voluntary Explorer Scout Leader in Edinburgh. In Summer 2013 I am taking a group of 45 teenagers to Nepal on a four-week development expedition. A major element of this expedition will be service work in the village of Chhangpatan. Primarily we will be working with the local community and primary school to improve the fabric of the school and construct new facilities.
In order to fund this work we are currently holding a lucky lottery. Tickets cost £12 each and will be entered into 12 monthly prize draws for £100 (Making a total prize fund of £1200). If you would like to support our work in Nepal and buy a ticket then please put £12 in an envelope marked for Mr Hewitt and drop it into the school office. Please enclose your child’s name and class and I will send out the ticket by return.
Many thanks Barry Hewitt Class Teacher – P3b

Fairtrade

We hope to create a hamper of fair-trade goodies to raffle at Parent Consultations on 20th and 22nd March. Donations would be gratefully received at Reception.
