Thank you to all parent and staff volunteers who offered to support the disco and please contact Jay if you are not available to assist on the new date.
Pupils returned to school on Tuesday to an activity packed week with a
Scottish theme, culminating in a fabulous P5-P7 ceilidh in the
playground on Friday 12th January led by Mrs Walker. Thank you to both
our P.E. Specialists, Mrs Walker and Mrs Berry, for providing wonderful
Scottish Country dancing for all our pupils P1-P7 throughout Scotland
Week.
NB Parent Council Family Ceilidh confirmed as Thursday25th January 6.30pm
We were incredibly proud of all the Primary 5 pupils today, for
the continued effort and hard work they have put into our homelessness
project.
This morning's carol singing was a huge success and we have managed to raise an incredible £510 for the charity Crisis. Thank you to all the families that turned up to support us. It was really appreciated! And grateful thanks to Hometech Integration for their very generous donation.
We hope you have a cosy weekend to warm up and rest those voices!
Ms French, Ms Pearmain, Ms Mackintosh, Miss Ferguson, Mr Howie, Miss Mitchell
Very well done to Miss Mitchell for braving the freezing cold to take part in Social Bite's Sleep in the Park last weekend https://www.sleepinthepark.co.uk/social-bite
and to all P5 pupils and staff for their inspiring commitment to raising awareness about Homelessness.
Thank you to Greg Dimeck for this photograph of the victorious 7-a-side P4 dads who won a recent match 8-2 (with forlorn P7 dads in the background!) We are led to believe good cheer was restored at Summerhall...
Congratulations to P4 siblings Catie, who was 19th overall, and Andrew who was 20th overall out
of 394 runners at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 6-8yr Junior
Race on Saturday 27th May with the same gun time (6min 28s) for the 1.5 km race. Catie
was pipped right on the line to being the fastest girl overall
(see podium photo) and Andrew did fantastically well as he's had a
chest infection for the last two weeks. Tremendous results!
Excellent sessions from the fabulous Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) Wild About Scotland team which P4 and P5 classes loved, on Tuesday 2nd May and Wednesday 3rd May. Kirsty and Rosie expertly led thoroughly engaging and perfectly pitched sessions on wildcats and beavers, highlighting key conservation issues for our pupils. Grateful thanks to both teachers and to Clydesdale Bank for sponsoring the free workshops. The Wild About Scotland bus is currently off road for a service but that didn't stop Kirsty and Rosie from delivering their top notch, practical science investigations. We also admired the fetching 'Wild About Scotland' design of their car!
Alternative wheels and the Wild About Scotland Team are unstoppable!
Lovely to welcome back Wild About Scotland and thank you very much!
On Friday 2nd September P4B pupils had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Tennis on the Road session at the Meadows Tennis Park, led by Kris Soutar and supported by our Tennis coach, Alex Harkins, and Tennis Scotland. Judy Murray was unfortunately unable to attend but the pupils had a terrific time. Thank you for such an exciting opportunity for the children.
TENNIS ON THE ROAD Judy Murray is aiming to give parents, coaches & teachers the tools needed to get
kids active and to help further kick-start and develop tennis in Scotland.
Another amazing weekend of running for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival with several Sciennes parents competing. P3 twins Catie and Andrew took part in the 6-8 yr old
1.5 km race on Saturday with 358 competitors. They were
delighted to smash their times from last year with Andrew in 42nd place in a time of 6:55 and Catie in 61st
place in a time of 7:11. Catie was a little bit disappointed that she
didn't break 7 minutes, but then discovered that she was the 7th fastest
girl overall. An amazing achievement for 7 year-olds! They are looking for
any Sciennes buddies who like to join them in the same race in 2017!
Thank you very much to Dr Alison Hulme for sharing lovely news and photos.
Saturday 14th May 2016, The Meadows, bright sunshine. Thirty girls'
football teams from across nine Edinburgh schools competed in the
Sciennes Spring Cup.
Around 2 hours and 135 goals after the first
kick off, in what was an extremely closely fought competition, Sciennes
P2/3 and P6/7 teams lifted the trophies for their year groups, with
P4/5s only narrowly missing out from making it a clean sweep. An
amazing performance all round.
All the girls gave their best and did
themselves proud in an exciting and at times nail-biting morning's
football. Congratulations all.
Congratulations to P3 pupil Angus and his dad Alastair who were overall winners at a Family Doubles Tennis Challenge on Sunday 24th April at at the Meadows courts. The event was
part of a British TennisUK wide initiative supported by Quorn. Well done to all the Sciennes children who took part. Angus and his dad will now be invited to watch a
grass court tournament in the UK as a prize -sadly not Wimbledon!
Thank you to Alex Harkins for passing on the information and photograph.

Team Sciennes!
On Wednesday 23rd March at the annual EPSSA Swimming and Diving Gala held at the Royal
Commonwealth Pool on Wednesday 23rd March our pupils had outstanding
success! First place in the Breastroke meant a Gold medal each for
Holly, Rose, Calum and Esther. Anna, Toby, Joanne and David won their
heat then came Third to win a Bronze medal each in the Backstroke.
Calum, Milenka, Joanna and Evie won their heat then also progressed to
the final for Freestyle and won a Bronze medal each. For the first time,
each of our swimmers won a medal, with Calum and Joanne winning two
medals!
Ellen took First place in the Level 2 Diving competition to win Gold.
That's an incredible haul of thirteen medals!
Thank
you to our P.E. and Swimming Specialists Mrs Beth Walker and Mrs
Cynthia Berry for preparing the children so well for the competition, to
Mrs Sally Nowell for helping to escort and to all the families who came
to cheer along. P7 pupil Susannah had to withdraw due to injury so it
was very good that meant she had a chance to join her mum poolside and
assist her with officiating duties.
It was great to
have two P3 pupils, Becky and Angus, join the Diving competition and
also three P5 pupils this year. Well done to all our divers,
particularly for their excellent sporting attitudes.
What
a fantastic testament to the hours of dedication our pupils have put
into swimming and diving practice and the tremendous commitment and
support of their families in encouraging them. It really was joyful to
see the children glow with self confidence in their achievements.

On Friday 25th October at P4-7 Assembly we marked One World Week by sharing how our P3 pupils have successfully led a whole school project with Mercy Corps to change 'Hope into Action.'
To date, the P3 Harvest Appeal has raised a fantastic £2100which will provide SEVEN PLAYGROUNDS in Syrian refugee camps.
Together, we thought about Article 31: All children have a right to play and thanked everyone for their generous donations.
We looked forward to the opening of our new wildlife garden/corridor/strip on Monday 26th October and have asked pupils to give us their ideas for a name for this exciting new area for outdoor learning which will be available between 12.50pm and 1.15pm Monday to Thursday. Only one gate will be used with the adults who will escort and supervise and pupils were reminded that they must visit the toilet before going across.
We will officially open Sciennes' Playground with a ceremony on Saturday 31st October 11.00am - 12.30pm.
The Eco Group gave a presentation about their House Pine Cone competition. They weighed all the collections from each class and announced that Lauder is the winning House. Lauder will have an extra playtime as a reward for all their efforts in collecting cones for the new playground area.
Mr Howie explained the significance of our Poppy Appeal. Donations will be accepted for poppies from next week. P7 pupils will man a stall outside the Hall in the morning and at breaks.
Everyone was introduced to our new P7 House and Sports Captains. They take on these roles alongside the rest of our P7 leaders who are all Prefects within school.
On Thursday 1st October Victoria Telford from Mercy Corps came to both P1-3 and P4-7 Assemblies to help P3 launch their Harvest Appeal. Pupils from P3 told everyone at Assemblies about their project to raise money to build playgrounds for Syrian refugees.

Victoria tells the pupils how Mercy Corps is helping Syrian refugees
After the Assemblies, groups of P3 pupils delivered hand decorated envelopes and asked families to make donations to the Appeal by Thursday 8th October. Great project, P3!
At special
Assemblies with Mercy Corps on Thursday 1st October, P3 pupils will tell
the school about their Harvest project to help Syrian refugees. The P3 Communications Group met on Wednesday and this is how they explained the project in their own words: Primary
Three are trying to raise money for Mercy Corps to help Syrian children
who are refugees. There is a war in Syria and lots of people have lost
their homes. Refugees are people who are trying to find a safe place to
live. We are lucky to have lots of things to play with in our
playground. We want to help children in refugee camps. We want to give
them their own playground. A playground costs £300.
We have
decorated envelopes and everyone will get one. Please put some money in
your envelope and bring it back to school. We will collect the envelopes
from the classes. Everyone in P3 has a different job to do. Some people
are envelope collectors, some people are money counters and some people
are going to talk at Assembly to tell everyone about our project.
Thank you from The P3 Communications Team Look out for more information from the team!
Congratulations to Matthew, Hannah, Andrew, Catie and Sophie and all Sciennes pupils who took part in
the Edinburgh Junior Marathon Festival on Saturday 30th May. (1.5 k for
6-8 yr olds and 2 k for 9-12 yr olds).
Sophie was raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and has currently
raised £115!
Congratulations to P4 pupil Matthew on completing the 1.5K event
