Thank you to everyone who dressed up today as Pudsey or a Superhero and gave a donation to Children in Need. We are aware that there are many fundraising events at the moment, so it was wonderful to raise £201 to date!

Superhero badges

All 97 of our P6 pupils have undergone Cycle Training and have been great ambassadors for Active Travel to school. In recognition of their achievements, they were awarded Sustran's Superhero badges at our Road Safety Assembly on Friday 14th November. Great that Sam Moody, CEC Sustainable Travel Officer, was able to congratulate them when he delivered a 'Look Out for Each Other' Road Safety Assembly for P4-P7.

P4-P7 Road Safety Assembly

Very well done to our JRSOs Kirsty and Morgan (Aidan was unfortunately absent today) and to P4B and Miss McGrouther who superbly led our P4-7 Road Safety Assembly on Friday 14th November. Our JRSOs took us through a 'Be Bright, Be Seen' quiz and P4B demonstrated how reflective clothing and accessories help keep us safe. Grateful thanks to City of Edinburgh's Sustainable Travel Officer, Sam Moody, who helped us understand how we can help drivers notice us, by giving us a lively presentation with volunteers from the audience. His final message was to think about how we can look out for each other by thinking about how we can be bright and be seen. It was lovely to welcome Sam back to Sciennes and we would like to thank him for all the special goodies he brought for our JRSOs. Road Safety week launches on Monday 17th November and our JRSOs have an exciting invitation to Brake's press launch at City Chambers. Thank you to Lorna Henderson for the invite.

Playground Fundraising Update

Comedy Quiz Night

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions Fundraiser

October's Comedy Quiz raised £1000 towards the new playground. A further £1300 was raised at November's Camera Obscura event. £5000 has been awarded by the South Central Neighbourhood Partnership towards survey and design costs. The Grange Association has donated £1000. All in all a pretty good start to the playground fundraising!

Musical Instrument Museum Workshops

Sarah Deters, Edinburgh University Musical Instrument Museum

We cannot thank Sarah Deters from Edinburgh University's Museum of Musical Instruments enough! Sarah, a primary school teacher in America and now head of Outreach for the Museum, had such a lovely manner with the children when she provided an amazing six workshops this week - all three Primary Five classes on Tuesday and all three Primary Four classes on Wednesday - about the history of musical instruments. She gave a fantastic presentation and allowed the children to get involved in playing the many reproduction instruments she brought with her into school. And this followed a superb special visit that she led for our School Orchestra on Monday! Thank you, Sarah!

Mrs Maguire's class wrote about the Music Workshops in their Reflection Diaries and it was obvious what a hugely positive impact the workshops and the presentation from Edinburgh University Music Society had on the children. May's writing in P5B was particularly moving, about how Music made her drift away in her own world and think about all the best things in life. Thank you to Mrs Campbell for timetabling the workshops so well and to everyone who contributed to a lovely week of Music at Sciennes!

Friends of Sciennes School Playground Improvements

We are fundraising to enhance the playground at Sciennes Primary.

Using natural materials, loose play materials, the expertise of a landscape architect - and with your help and support - our playground will be completely transformed for our children and the local community.

FUNDRAISE!
One of the roles of Sciennes Parent Council is to raise funds to support Sciennes School and its pupils. This year (2014-15) our main fundraising focus is the Playground. Events are held throughout the year organised by our Fundraising and Events Subgroup. Parent volunteers are always needed and welcome. Fundraising events are held throughout the school year and are publicised on this site and the Parent Council website.

We are also asking pupils and parents to get involved in fundraising out with the school. Could you organise your own fundraising effort? For example, a bake sale on your street, Hold a swishing party ? Get sponsored for running a mile or doing a good deed ? Have a dinner party and ask for donations? Have a craft evening and make things to sell at our Fairs ? Have fun and raise funds for a fun place ! Please let us know what you’ve done – we will be celebrating all your achievements on the school website!

EASYFUNDRAISING You can also sign up to EASYFUNDRAISING.ORG.UK so that when you shop online you can raise money for Sciennes at no extra charge to you. We are currently registered as ‘Sciennes Primary Parent Council’ and our families have already raised £1404 this way!

CHRISTMAS FAIR
Saturday 29th November 12pm-3pm 

We shall be running a raffle and a silent auction and we are reliant mainly on local businesses and parent donations for the majority of the prizes. 

We are looking for anything you think someone might like to win or bid for, from a week in a holiday house, use of a camper van or caravan, some local artwork, days out and event tickets to the offer of your own services in babysitting, ironing, cooking, gardening or sewing on brownie/cub badges! Get your thinking caps on and please let us know if you have any bright ideas.

P3 Dance Show

What a fantastic event the P3 Dance Show was on Friday 7th November! Everybody had worked so hard to learn a huge amount of moves to dance through the decades.  Strictly stars of the future!

Thank You EUMS!

What a fabulous musical presentation on Wednesday 12th November by Edinburgh University Music Society in the Reid Concert Hall! Grateful thanks to Ben Crabbe and Amanda MacLeod, President of EUMS, and all the talented musicians for such a lively, informative and inspiring presentation. Our children from P4A, P5A, P5B, P5C, P6A, P6C and P7B learned about all the different instruments of the orchestra as each musician gave demonstrations from each section of the orchestra - strings, brass, woodwind and percussion - then played pieces highlighting each section. We even had some interactive body percussion and Singing sessions, where everyone joined in with the Orchestra and Choir, and an opportunity for Rui to take a starring role conducting! Beautiful improvised Jazz singing and piano playing and powerful singing from the Choir. From Mozart to Calvin Harris and ending with Skyfall it was a joy to be a part of and our children absolutely loved it! What fantastic role models, who undoubtedly have encouraged our own musicians and inspired more to get involved in music making. Thank you for making us so welcome and for graciously getting involved with some clips for our BBC Music's "God Only Knows" tribute. A delight!

P1 Registration Thursday 13th November

Register for a P1 place if your child is 4 years old by 28th February 2015 and due to start school in August 2015. 

Sciennes will be enrolling its new intake of P1s on THURSDAY 13th NOVEMBER 2014 9.00am-11.30am or 1.30pm-4.00pm.
