At Sciennes, we recognise that we are incredibly fortunate to enjoy strong partnerships with families and to have such
marvellous ongoing parental support. For this year's Summer Fair,
our fantastic Parent Council was most fortunate to have been able to draw upon a huge wealth of parental and local community talent, experience and expertise to WoW! our children with World of Work career possibilities. As well as providing all the usual fabulous fun of the fair!
Saturday 3rd June 2017 saw the culmination of tireless efforts to create a joyful and buzzing Summer Fair : organised and led by parents - supported by staff and pupils. Many of the workshops ans activities were also delivered by parents and pupils and we were supported by a multitude of families who attended.
Jay Santhanam and Aileen Nimmo led the Fundraising and Events subgroup of the Parent
Council, assisted by Phoebe Cochrane as
Chair of the Parent Council, to achieve a magnificent day, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Careful planning ensured the entire event ran extremely
smoothly throughout. What a wonderful way to celebrate the school's 125th Anniversary!

We
are indebted to all our contributors for providing FREE activities for the children and sharing their skills and enthusiasm for their professions. Special thanks to Hilary Snaith from University of Edinburgh Infections Diseases Department with her captivating microscope and bug samples, Ade Richard from Roger Bulivant Ltd and STEMnet Ambassadors for the engineering and construction workshop,Ayah Sofia from Mercy Corps, Jo Pike from Scottish Wildlife Trust, authors Mary Turner Thomson and Brian Ruckley for book making and comic strip workshops, professional comedian and comedy producer Richard Melvin for film making workshops, Sciennes Art Club teacher and Founder of Light Bulb Arts Heather Lucchesi, Andrea Baxter from Revitalize Massage (with full size skeleton and bones!), Helen Anderson's Relax Kids and paramedic Matt Stephenson whose ambulance proved to be another huge draw. Thanks all for providing inspirational 'Future Me' ideas for our children.
Tremendous live music and dance displays added to the ambience and created a great community feel to the day. Thank you to Peter Verity and his band, Gaby Albornoz from Dance Ihayami for the Indian dance performance, P6 pupils Faye and Melissa from Rob Ironside's Woodwind Band and also June Underwood's Highland dancers.
A Homebaking Stall, Food Stall, Books, CDs and DVDs Stall, Plant Stall, Flowers Stall, Tombola, Toy Stall,
Second Hand Uniform Stall, Football Stall, Fruit Group Stall, Eco Bottles stall, Teas and Coffees and Ice Cream Stall, with very
generous support from Papa John's Pizza and Sainsbury's have helped us raise
valuable funds to enhance the children's experiences and learning. Thanks to Nadia's Fruit Shop on Argyll
Place for providing exotic fruits and Treehouse Print Solutions for
making lovely banners for our fruit stall.

and P7
pupils led a variety of interesting and fun activities including science
experiments, netball shots, putting, face painting, coin balance, stick
or kick football, Future Me sketching and hook-a-duck. Glamorous Glitter and Henna Hands
stalls also attracted large numbers (thank you Mrs Aliya Tariq for henna). Our P7s were excellent Fair Maker
ambassadors, welcoming, directing and supporting visitors as well as
providing signage. Many thanks to Mrs Jane Maguire and Ms Alison
Mackintosh for co-ordinating pupil involvement.
Thank you to everyone who helped facilitate the road closure and it was lovely to see the children playing in the street and enjoying the stalls and activities there. Our newly installed air quality monitor from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) should capture the drop in transport emissions, which we can share with pupils ahead of National Clean Air Day on 15th June.
Leanne Boyle, Cath McCormack and their team of helpers carefully organised floats for all the stalls then stayed after hours meticulously counting funds raised.

Thank you to the Sciennes' army of volunteers, who contributed their magnificent support in what aptly happens to be #Volunteersweek! That includes members of staff who came along to assist, DHT Carolyn Anstruther, Mrs Noble and her son Scott and Business Manager Angela Christie who all lent a hand all day, supporting stand-in janitoress Liz in Mr Reid's absence. We all send him our best wishes for a good recovery. No photograph in situ unfortunately, but many thanks to Tim Pask and his team for co-ordinating the Foodhall and Teas and Coffees.
