Pitching to Save the Planet - Vote Now

http://www.virginmediabusiness.co.uk/pitch-to-rich/start-up/global-surface-intelligence-ltd

Sciennes' parent Nigel Douglas is posing the question to Sir Richard Branson, do you “Want to Save the Planet?” via his “Pitch to Rich 2015” competition.

Nigel is Founder and CEO of Global Surface Intelligence (GSi) and seeks your help in voting for his pitch to win Virgin Business' exciting competition. Please share via social media networks and vote now to help Nigel's innovative software mitigate climate change.

We have developed a very powerful software platform which provides ‘Big data’ predictive analytics of satellite and other data. Using this platform, we can now observe our planet, more clearly and in new ways and on new scales. Using it, we have brought to market our first products which reduce costs and add value to a massive $1.2 trillion timber market. Put simply, we can tell how much timber is in a forest; which ones have grown quickest over time, and we can identify deforestation or even forest degradation. Our data covers the entire surface on the planet from the present year back to 2001 and this is the first time in the field of science this has been achieved. Our methods are totally unique and they allow us to deliver data cheaper, faster, better than is possible by any other means. We can solve real business problems the industry faces, and the only thing stopping us, is people not knowing about us. Winning this competition would change all that.

Our processing capabilities and analytics are unrivaled and right at the forefront of innovation. Our software platform has endless applications that will help businesses in any sector. The uniqueness of our data has enabled us to open up opportunities in six continents and all this from my kitchen table. Our data is also crucial to monitor our changing ecosystem and the effects of climate change and we have only scratched the surface of our capabilities. We are a small company that has developed unique technology that could be applied to help mitigate climate change. We need help to be heard and that is why we deserve to win.

GSi would really like your Vote. http://goo.gl/O4vPng To progress through the competition, we really need your vote and it will only take 5 seconds of your time. Please vote now. Many thanks.
                                                                                                  Nigel Douglas, Sciennes Parent

P3 Dad Angry Birds Game Developer

Wow! Lucky Primary Three to have a presentation on Thursday 2nd April from Gavin's dad Richard Hare (Co-Founder and President of his company Outplay) who has designed many video games, including Angry Birds 'Stella Pop'. Richard explained how ideas and designs are developed from 'white box' initial stages by telling the children about his 'one button' 'Swinging Stupendo' game. We are extremely grateful for Richard's time and his fascinating insight into the world of game design.
More information and photographs on the P3 Class Page. Richard kindly provided a workshop for P3A and said the children showed a lot of promise as budding game designers!

Oscar Winning Director to Film at Sciennes!

We are extremely excited that Sciennes has been chosen to participate in a scene for a new feature film, "La Corrispondenza" (The Correspondence) by the acclaimed oscar winning Director of "Cinema Paradiso", Giuseppe Tornatore and the children in the After School Club will have the opportunity to perform as extras. Filming will take place at the school gates and in the playground.

Foodbank Easter Eggs - Outstanding Citizens!

How kind and wonderful that Sciennes brothers Alex and Rory decided to invite families to donate an Easter egg this year to give to Northeast Edinburgh Foodbank. And such overwhelmingly generous donations from Sciennes! Amazingly, many more Easter eggs than are pictured here were donated and have already been transported to the Foodbank.

Extremely well done boys and thank you. Thanks to Yash who helped out too and to Alex and Rory's mum, Pupil Support Assistant Helen Anderson for all her help with the project. Alex and Yash also organised a very successful Foodbank fundraiser earlier in the year:

Parent Feedback to Playground Survey Helps Inform Developments

Thank you to all the parents and staff who came along to Tuesday’s Parent Council meeting – it was a very productive and participative meeting. The Playground Group reported back on how the feedback from parents has informed the development of the playground plans. Click here to see the full report from the Playground Group and Senior Leadership Team.  Parents and staff were asked to indicate how well each of the areas of concern had been attended to – this was done using stickers on ‘feedback lines’ which provided a clear visual picture of views. This enabled a discussion on ‘ways forward’ and there was an agreement by the Parent Council to support playground improvements based on the Playground Group’s responses to the areas of concern. There was an acknowledgment that this has been a challenging process with tight timescales and a broad range of views. The incredible fundraising efforts of the wider parent community were recognised – around £35,000 so far in this school year. The school is still waiting to hear about the SportScotland funding application.
A discussion took place about the need to highlight this year’s non-playground spends – the Parent Council and Friends of Sciennes School Trust has additionally funded Benmore and Lagganlia subsidies, club subsidies, swimming, cycling, the pupil water cooler, eco activities and a music event. Further effort will be made to share this information with the wider parent community.
The next Parent Council Meeting is taking place on Thursday 23rd April, 7-9pm – all parents are very welcome.

Claire Wheeler, Chair of Sciennes Parent Council

JASS: Easter Activities

At Sciennes we seek to recognise and celebrate our pupils' wider achievements as Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens.

JASS AWARDS in P6 and P7
We aim to allocate about six months to the Junior Award Scheme Scotland (JASS) awards at Bronze (P6) and Silver (P7) Levels and we include as many holidays within that time as possible - from the beginning of the October holiday until the end of the Easter holiday - to help pupils achieve their goals. Next term, pupils have been asked to give a short talk explaining how they have achieved either 8 (Bronze) or 12 (Silver) hours in each of the four categories: Get Active, Stay Active; Adventure; My Interests; Me and My World.  We have highlighted numerous Easter holiday activities available within the city to help any pupils make up additional hours still required to achieve the award (see website or Sciennes Twitter feed and Facebook Page for details). Individual log in accounts have now been created so we hope to begin our pilot eJASS programme with some of our P7 pupils before the end of term.

GET ACTIVE, STAY ACTIVE
There are numerous sports camps and activities across the city this Easter, from Dance Division sessions to Meadows Tennis, Blaze basketball and free swimming being only some of the ones on offer. Please check our website or keep an eye on our Twitter feed for details of these and many more active opportunities in the city. Our pupils take part in so many sporting activities throughout the year that many clocked up the minimum hours in a few weeks!

ADVENTURE
Most of our pupils have easily achieved the minimum 8 (Bronze) or 12 (Silver) Adventure award at Benmore or Lagganlia but there are many adventurous activities available at the City of Edinburgh partner Outdoor Learning Centre - Bangholm - including hillwalking, kayaking and climbing. Or try Bridge 8 - Scotland's first canal based activity centre for raft building or even akwakating! See recent posts on our website for details. Cycling or walking trips in the outdoors and P6 orienteering activities earlier in the term with Ms French also count!

ME AND MY INTERESTS
The Science Festival starts this weekend and there are numerous art gallery and museum tours and events throughout the holiday. Any hobby or interest or skill (other than sport) such as learning about Science or History, sewing, calligraphy, learning a musical instrument, reading, language learning, photography or computer programming for example, can count towards achieving the 8 (P6 Bronze) or 12 (P7 Silver) Me and My Interests award.

ME AND MY WORLD
Me and My World Ideas:

Making a Difference to Others - in school, at home, in your community, locally, nationally
This year, our pupils have generously supported local and national charity fundraisers: Food Bank, Children in Need, Comic Relief, as well as taking part in Playground Fundraising events at school including Camera Obscura Family evening, Christmas Fair and the forthcoming Swimathon. Participation in these events counts towards the 'Me and My World' JASS award, as does making a difference at home such as helping neighbours or gardening. Many of our pupils take part in the Earth Calling after school club, who also offer holiday camps. Pupils might consider preparing and delivering a Talk about a charitable or environmental organisation or deciding to give their time in some way to help others over the holiday period.

We hope all our pupils have a safe, happy and active holiday, enjoying some of the wonderful opportunities available in our city.

Term ends Thursday 2nd April at 2.50pm / 3.20pm and we all resume on TUESDAY 21st April.

Katie, Mia, Boris and Mhairi Medal Success
Thank you to Mrs Beth Walker, one of our PE Specialists and Swimming Teacher, for organising and compering the Edinburgh Primary School Sports Association (EPSSA) Swim and Dive Gala event for all city primary schools on Wednesday 1st April at the Royal Commonwealth Pool. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event for all 500 children competing. Thank you to all the families who lent their support and cheered everyone on. All our P7 swimmers swam well in the Breaststroke (6th), Backstroke (4th) and Front Crawl (3rd) heat races and managed to reach the Finals of the Front Crawl. We had many entrants to the Diving competition and remarkable success in this event with Mia W and Boris achieving Gold medals, Katie a Silver and Mhari a Bronze! Great sporting attitudes from all our pupils, cheering on all competitors - especially our JGHS cluster friends! Well done all!

A team photo was taken which will be published in due course.

Thank you to all school staff, parents and coaches for bringing their teams to our fantastic Swim Relay and Dive Gala yesterday at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.  Many adults at the Gala commented on the polite behaviour of so many of the pupils and we very much appreciate that so many of them thanked the organisers.

Sciennes Wildlife Club Spring to Summer 2015

EARTH CALLING AT SCIENNES

Spring is in the air! With all the new life emerging and the evenings getting longer and warmer, Earth Calling will provide the opportunity for some more great wildlife adventures next term….

The club will run for 9 sessions starting on Thursday 23rd April and finishing on Thursday 25th June. There will be no club on Thursday 7th May. Clubs run from 1515-1735, however there will be one evening club this term which will run from 1900-2100 instead of the afternoon session, allowing the chance to spot some nocturnal wildlife (date to be confirmed).

The cost of each session is £7; therefore a total cost of £63 (10 sessions, with £7 refund from cancelled club last term). Please make cheques payable to Earth Calling, and have payments ready by the first session along with the parental consent form. New members will be required to return our codes of conduct and bush craft protocol forms.

Please make sure children are appropriately dressed (outdoor clothes, waterproof jackets, old shoes or boots, hats gloves scarves, you know how muddy they can get and how unpredictable our weather can be).

Languages Partnership Project with Madrid

Article in City of Edinburgh 'Bright Futures'

For the past two years, schools in the James Gillespies’ cluster have been involved in a partnership with schools in the Comunidad de Madrid in Spain. The partnership has offered the teachers the chance to share good practice and enrich their lessons through the exciting cultural experiences gained when visiting the partners’ country.

The schools in the James Gillespie’s cluster are:
  • James Gillespie’s High
  • Sciennes Primary
  • James Gillespie’s Primary
  • Preston Street Primary
  • Royal Mile Primary
  • Taobh na Pàirce
  • Tollcross Primary
This month teachers from Madrid visited Edinburgh and were treated to a range of activities and experiences by our 1+2 Language team. This visit comes ahead of a group of primary school pupils from Madrid visiting Tollcross Primary in May 2015.

Sarah Spiller, 1+2 Development Officer, tells the full story:

City of Edinburgh 1+2 Languages team were delighted to welcome our partners from Comunidad de Madrid to Edinburgh in March as part of a two year-long project linking schools in Spain with our schools in the James Gillespie’s cluster.

The European-funded project has focused on building partnerships and identifying and sharing best practices in learning and teaching, particularly in how we teach languages. Teachers from the James Gillespie’s cluster schools have travelled to Madrid on two separate occasions. Firstly to observe the Madrid bilingual education program, then during the second trip our teachers taught students using strategies including cooperative and active learning styles and innovative approaches to planning. These strategies have been highlighted as a strength of our teachers and were delivered to pupils in the partner schools in Madrid completely in English. On their visit to Scotland the Madrid teachers taught our primary school learners’ lessons entirely in Spanish.

The visiting teachers also enjoyed a range of Scottish cultural events, such as a number of wonderful Gaelic performances and a ceilidh at Taobh na Pàirce and a fantastic international tapas evening at Sciennes Primary.

The teachers engaged in rich professional dialogue around language learning.  Existing partnerships between pupils and schools in Scotland and Madrid were strengthened as a result of the project . Pupils have been emailing, video conferencing and writing to their new friends in Spain and in the final stages of the project, Tollcross Primary School will be welcoming a pupil group from their partner school, Colegio Joaquín Blume, in May 2015.

Liz Gray, Quality Improvement Manager, said,
The people have made the project and our Madrid partners could not have asked for a more welcoming, capable and reflective group of teachers.
We would like to extend a huge gracias to all the schools involved for their hard work and enthusiasm during the course of the project.
