JASS: Easter Activities

At Sciennes we seek to recognise and celebrate our pupils' wider achievements as Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens.

JASS AWARDS in P6 and P7
We aim to allocate about six months to the Junior Award Scheme Scotland (JASS) awards at Bronze (P6) and Silver (P7) Levels and we include as many holidays within that time as possible - from the beginning of the October holiday until the end of the Easter holiday - to help pupils achieve their goals. Next term, pupils have been asked to give a short talk explaining how they have achieved either 8 (Bronze) or 12 (Silver) hours in each of the four categories: Get Active, Stay Active; Adventure; My Interests; Me and My World.  We have highlighted numerous Easter holiday activities available within the city to help any pupils make up additional hours still required to achieve the award (see website or Sciennes Twitter feed and Facebook Page for details). Individual log in accounts have now been created so we hope to begin our pilot eJASS programme with some of our P7 pupils before the end of term.

GET ACTIVE, STAY ACTIVE
There are numerous sports camps and activities across the city this Easter, from Dance Division sessions to Meadows Tennis, Blaze basketball and free swimming being only some of the ones on offer. Please check our website or keep an eye on our Twitter feed for details of these and many more active opportunities in the city. Our pupils take part in so many sporting activities throughout the year that many clocked up the minimum hours in a few weeks!

ADVENTURE
Most of our pupils have easily achieved the minimum 8 (Bronze) or 12 (Silver) Adventure award at Benmore or Lagganlia but there are many adventurous activities available at the City of Edinburgh partner Outdoor Learning Centre - Bangholm - including hillwalking, kayaking and climbing. Or try Bridge 8 - Scotland's first canal based activity centre for raft building or even akwakating! See recent posts on our website for details. Cycling or walking trips in the outdoors and P6 orienteering activities earlier in the term with Ms French also count!

ME AND MY INTERESTS
The Science Festival starts this weekend and there are numerous art gallery and museum tours and events throughout the holiday. Any hobby or interest or skill (other than sport) such as learning about Science or History, sewing, calligraphy, learning a musical instrument, reading, language learning, photography or computer programming for example, can count towards achieving the 8 (P6 Bronze) or 12 (P7 Silver) Me and My Interests award.

ME AND MY WORLD
Me and My World Ideas:

Making a Difference to Others - in school, at home, in your community, locally, nationally
This year, our pupils have generously supported local and national charity fundraisers: Food Bank, Children in Need, Comic Relief, as well as taking part in Playground Fundraising events at school including Camera Obscura Family evening, Christmas Fair and the forthcoming Swimathon. Participation in these events counts towards the 'Me and My World' JASS award, as does making a difference at home such as helping neighbours or gardening. Many of our pupils take part in the Earth Calling after school club, who also offer holiday camps. Pupils might consider preparing and delivering a Talk about a charitable or environmental organisation or deciding to give their time in some way to help others over the holiday period.

We hope all our pupils have a safe, happy and active holiday, enjoying some of the wonderful opportunities available in our city.

Term ends Thursday 2nd April at 2.50pm / 3.20pm and we all resume on TUESDAY 21st April.
