Remarkable Parent Led International Summer Fair a Huge Success!

Grateful thanks to graphic designer parent Jimmy Chow for superb artwork for the Summer Fair and to Thomas Elliott for his wonderful drawing of Sciennes:

At Sciennes, we recognise that we are incredibly fortunate to enjoy strong partnerships with families and to have such marvellous ongoing parental support. For this year's Summer Fair, our fantastic Parent Council was able to capitalise on the broad range of cultures within our school community and provide exciting, engaging opportunities to promote learning and respect for one other through an International themed event. We are also most fortunate to have been able to draw upon a huge wealth of parental talent, experience and expertise.

Saturday 4th June saw the culmination of concerted efforts to create a remarkable and joyful parent led International Fair : organised and led by parents - supported by staff and pupils - with many workshops and presentations delivered by parents and also supported by the multitude of parents who attended.

Charlotte Herthelius, as Convener of the Fundraising and Events subgroup of the Parent Council, assisted by Sciennes' Languages Co-ordnator Bethan Owen and Kristel Torokoff, as Chair of the Parent Council, have worked creatively with teams of parents, staff and pupils to achieve a most magnificent day celebrating Sciennes' cultural diversity, as well as providing all the usual fun of the summer fair. Careful planning ensured the entire event ran extremely smoothly on the day.

We are indebted to all our contributors for providing FREE Languages Activities for the children. Special thanks to the University of Edinburgh, including Professor of Developmental Linguistics and Founding Director of Bilingualism Matters, Antonella Sorace, for her inspiring Keynote address and particularly to parent Dr Pau Navarro, Research Fellow at the university, for her support in organising so many activities.

A Silent Auction, Bake Sale, International Food Stall, Plant Stall, Toy Stall, Second Hand Uniform Stall, Football Stall and Ice Cream Stall, with very generous support from Sainsbury's and Papa John's, have helped us raise valuable funds to enhance the children's experiences and learning.

These photographs are an attempt to capture just a glimpse of an extraordinary day, in glorious sunshine:

Thank you very much to CHARLOTTE HERTHELIUS, Chair of the Parent Council PTA and Events and Fundraising Group, and congratulations for leading and organising the superb International Summer Fair.

Sam, Isaac and Nils Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival

Congratulations to our three P5 pupils Sam, Isaac and Nils who competed in the Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival at Dalkeith Park on Friday 3rd June.
http://ssoa.org.uk/2016.html

They all did really well and all completed their courses. They were the 8th team in their category of P5/P6 (competing against lots of bigger boys!) Sam was 6th overall in his age group and Isaac and Nils also did very well, especially as they were new to the sport. They were also delightful boys to look after and a credit to their school and parents!

Grateful thanks to Su for supporting the pupils' participation in this event.

Parent Council Survey – Closing Date 13 June

REMINDER – LESS THAN A WEEK TO GIVE YOUR VIEWS IN OUR SURVEY
CLOSING DATE THIS MONDAY

As a parent or carer of a Sciennes pupil, is there anything you think could be improved further at school? Is there something you sometimes moan about? Do you have some an idea for a change that could be made?

Are any of these issues important to you?
* seeing an expansion in Sciennes after school care services
* having a Sciennes breakfast club set up
* giving feedback on after school clubs and suggestions for new ones.

The Sciennes Parent Council survey is seeking your views on topics such as these, which were not included in the recent City of Edinburgh school survey. Based on your responses, together with the school, we can develop plans for the next few years to address parent concerns and develop your ideas.

Already many parents have given their views. Now there is less than a week for you to share your views and ideas, so please take the survey online by following this link.

PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR SURVEY BY 1PM ON MONDAY 13 JUNE.
(Paper copies of the survey are available in the School Reception.)
Thank you in advance for your help.

Parent Council Vacancies

Sciennes Parent Council needs you!

In advance of the Parent Council AGM on Thursday 16 June at 7pm in the school, we’d like to recruit candidates for various Parent Council vacancies. If you are interested in putting forth your name or in nominating somebody, please email sciennesparentcouncil@gmail.com.

YEAR REP (one for each year)
This is a new position. The Year Rep will be responsible for representing their given year group at all parent council meetings. For example, the P4 Year Rep will be representing all P4 parents and carers. The Year Rep should be an approachable individual who is able to represent views that may differ from their own. If more than one individual is interested in the role, it can be shared. For more information please see Year Reps-FAQs.
Responsibilities
  • Attend Parent Council meetings (generally there are 6 per year)
  • Collect and represent the year group’s views on important Parent Council matters
  • Report back to year group on Parent Council issues
*Please note that the Year Rep is a distinct role from that of Parent Class Rep, who has been used primarily for communication.*

EVENTS AND FUNDRAISING CONVENER
The Events and Fundraising Convener oversees the planning and execution of all Parent Council events and fundraising initiatives. This role would be suited to a ‘job share’.
Responsibilities
  • Work with the school, the Chair of the Parent Council and the Finance Team to agree fundraising targets for the year
  • Draft a fundraising and events plan for the year
  • Organise events and activities that appeal to a range of interests and personal budgets to ensure there’s something for everyone
  • Chair EFG meetings and attend Parent Council meetings
  • Attend Friends of Sciennes School Trust meetings as an Ex Officio Trustee.
Key Qualities include
  • Must be able to work well in a team
  • Be flexible and open to new ideas
  • Ability to recruit volunteers and delegate responsibilities

VICE-CHAIR (OR CO-CHAIR)
The Vice-Chair works closely with the Chair, assisting with responsibilities where possible and providing support. The Chair and Vice-Chair may decide to formally share tasks – such as subgroup liaison or attending external meetings. It is advisable that the Vice-Chair be part of the Communications Group.
Repsonsibilities
  • Take on the responsibilities of the Chair if the Chair is absent or unavailable. This includes chairing Parent Council meetings if necessary.
  • Meet with Chair periodically to review Parent Council progress.

CHAIR
There are two basic jobs the Chair should do: 1) Guide the Parent Council to achieve its aims; 2) Chair the meetings of the Parent Council.
Repsonsibilities
  • Chair Parent Council meetings (includes welcoming guests, ensuring fair discussions take place and everyone gets their say, getting through the Agenda on time, summing up issues and decisions etc)
  • Set the Agenda and ensure that the Parent Council Action Plan is followed
  • Attend external training and meetings which support the work of Sciennes Parent Council such as Neighbourhood Meetings of Head Teachers and Chairs.
  • Have periodic meetings with the Head Teachers to discuss matters of relevance to the Parent Council and the wider parent forum.
  • Attend Friends of Sciennes School Trust meetings as an Ex-Officio member
Full details of Office Bearer positions can be found here.

Parent Council Year Reps – Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Year Reps needed?
Over the years there has been a concern that not all year groups are equally represented on Parent Council. By having a named Year Rep, who is a voting member of the Parent Council, we hope that all parents/ carers and year groups will feel like they have representation on Parent Council.

What happens if more than one parent comes forward to represent a year group?
It is quite possible that more than one individual will step forward or be nominated to represent their year group. If this happens, the nominated individuals will be informed prior to the AGM so that they can decide amongst themselves who will be their year’s Year Rep, or if they’d like to share the position.  In the event that agreement cannot be reached by the individuals, names will be drawn at random at the AGM.

Could we put forward one rep per class?
Yes. However, those individuals should designate a primary spokesperson. At Parent Council meetings each year group will only have one vote, so a consensus should be agreed upon before the meeting.

Do I have to attend every PC meeting?
Each year group should be represented at every meeting. If you are unable to attend, you should appoint someone from your designated year group in your stead.

How do I collect the views of parents I’m representing?
First, you will not necessarily need to collect parent views on all issues. Every year there are only a limited number of items that go to a vote. In these cases the Year Rep could send out an email via the Parent Class Reps with a poll or survey to all parents in the year group.

What is the difference between a Year Rep and a Class Rep?
The Year Rep is meant to represent their designated year at Parent Council meetings, communicate relevant information back to their year group and collect parent views on certain issues.
The Class Rep is responsible for putting together a class email list and sending out periodic emails. The Class Rep’s primary function is communication.

I’m working full time, can I still volunteer?
Definitely. There are generally 6 Parent Council meetings a year, held in the evenings. The dates for these will be published well in advance, at the beginning of every school year.

Could I share this post with another parent?
Yes. If more than one parent volunteers or is nominated for the role, the individuals may arrange to share the role.

I have not been involved with PC previously; would I still be able to become a Year Rep?
Yes, the job of Year Rep is a great way to become involved with Parent Council.

Do I need to report back from PC meetings to the parents I represent?
Yes. It is always good practice to make parents aware of what decisions have been made on their behalf. This can easily be done by email.

School App

http://mob.conduit.com/landing/Desktop?appId=0b6905e0-5dc0-454b-8316-f03086fe5aeb#.V1JzFmaCbzF

Four years ago, we explored developing a school app as a signed up member of the Apple Developer Program, but submitting to iTunes was a very involved process.

We used a free service to design our app initially - Conduit (now Como) - but it offered only a limited numbers of users. At present, the app is only available in a web browser but the links do work if you click on the buttons - Map, Twitter, More etc.

Parent Claire Wheeler suggested looking into this again and we would warmly welcome parental support from anyone who has expertise in this field. Please contact lucy.gallagher@sciennes.edin.sch.uk

Thank you.

Sports Day 2016

Believe • Achieve
What a lovely image, shared by parent Fiona Denvir, taken as pupils made their way back to school after a joyful Sports Day in the sunshine in the Meadows on Friday 3rd June.

Grateful thanks to our PE Specialist, Mrs Beth Walker, for her expert organisation which ensured all events ran smoothly and a great time was had by all at this year's Rio themed day. We were delighted that about a third! of the P7 year group turned up at 8.15am this morning, having volunteered to help set up. Marvellous!

Mrs Walker had an excellent idea to invite P7 pupils to opt in to manning events and they truly excelled as leaders! Outstanding ambassadors for the school.

Congratulations to Tantallon, who not only won the relay race, but were overall Sports Day winners, with a runaway lead! Mrs Noble is so proud of your achievement!

There is still all to play for in deciding which House will win an end of term afternoon of Fun and Frolics, so keep earning those House Points everyone!

Time is running out but we still have some major deals on wheels - including buses & trains - and there are only 48 hours to go. There's no pressure, but the auction will come to a dramatic end at midnight on Saturday 4 June. Be in it to win it.

Miss Stuffy McTat
And what a month it's been: who knew that Miss Stuffy McTat would be the star of the fair? Although, with only a modest bid of £60, our taxidermy cat is SO under-valued.

We've got a brand new entry - a family ticket for the MagicFestival. With zero bids, this magic experience could be yours for a pretty penny, or at least a tenner.

The two Scotrail tickets worth £200 to anywhere in Scotland could be yours for offers over £20...

You don't need to take our word for it, check out the list attached for all the deals. And, you can always bid at the Summer Fair on the day (outside the main hall by the discovery den). Miss Stuffy will be available for photos, even autographs, for those brave enough to take a selfie with her!

Thank you to all our amazing bidders, may the odds be ever in your favour...

Dear Parents/Carers

The Summer Fair is almost upon us and once again we appeal to all of a culinary bent to get their rolling pins ready for the Great Sciennes bake-off. This year we are looking for donations of an international flavour, sweet or savoury. Scottish tablet; Baklava; Irish soda bread; ecclefechan tart; peanut mochi; pumpernickel, anything goes! Baking that represents the diverse multi cultural nature of our school and its pupils.

All donations to the bake sale, however big or small are exceedingly welcome. There will be a first prize of £20.00 John Lewis vouchers awarded to the best contribution to the bake sale and two runner up prizes.

So come on, support the school's fundraising efforts, show off your gastronomic delights and get your bake on.

Kind regards

The Bake Sale Team.

All donations to be submitted either on Friday afternoon to the school office or on the day of the sale, (preferably before it starts).

School Streets Evaluation Survey

Sciennes has been a pilot school for the 'School Streets' safer streets project. City of Edinburgh is nearing the ninth month of operation for the Phase 1 schools and 3 months for phase 2 schools of the School Streets project.  An evaluation is now being prepared ahead of a committee meeting in August where the decision will be taken on the future of the project after the end of the pilot.

Please take time to contribute your opinion on the School Streets project at Sciennes.

What have been the main issues for your school?
                             Are there areas for improvement?
What are the opportunities going forward?

Thank you
